    Notes on this file

What you get in the SVG

Every cut line in the file comes across as a path with the same curves Silhouette Studio stored. Cutpeek doesn't trace a picture or redraw anything: a .studio3 file keeps each outline as Bézier curves in millimetres, and those numbers are written straight into the SVG. A 50 mm circle stays a 50 mm circle.

      • Size. The SVG's width and height are written in millimetres, and its coordinates are millimetres too, so software that respects units imports it at the size you designed.
      • Position. By default the SVG is the size of your Silhouette page, so every shape keeps its place. Choose Just the design to trim the SVG to the shapes.
      • Colours. Line colours and solid fill colours from Silhouette Studio 5 files are kept.
      • Layers. Each Silhouette layer becomes a group, labelled with the layer's name. Inkscape shows these as layers. Untick a layer before downloading to leave it out.
      • Text. Letters come across as outlines, which is what a cutter needs. You can't edit the words afterwards, but nothing depends on having the font installed.

Pick a style for where it's going

The same shapes can be written three ways, and the right one depends on the software that will open the file.

      • Colours as saved keeps outlines in their Silhouette line colours, with fills where the design had them. This is the best choice for Inkscape, Illustrator, Affinity and laser software, where colour often decides the operation.
      • Filled shapes, for Cricut fills each shape in its colour with no outline. Cricut Design Space and similar apps treat closed shapes as solid pieces to cut, so this matches what they expect, and holes such as the middle of an O stay open.
      • Thin black cut lines draws every outline as a thin black line. It is plain and predictable for cutters that ignore colour, and easy to check by eye.

      What isn't converted

Some things in a .studio3 file are not cut lines, and Cutpeek says so when it finds them rather than quietly dropping them.

      • Pictures placed for print and cut are left out. Only the cut lines are converted.
      • Effects such as puncher, emboss and offset are worked out by Silhouette Studio when it cuts and aren't stored in the file, so there is nothing to convert.
      • Line thickness and dashed line styles aren't read yet. Outlines come across at a standard thin width.
      • Pattern fills: the outline is converted, the pattern isn't.

      Check the size after importing

Most programs read the millimetre size correctly. A few older ones assume a fixed number of pixels per inch instead. After importing, measure one shape whose size you know. If it is off, the importing program has scaled it; fix the size there or look for an import setting for units or DPI.

      Many files at once

Converting one file at a time is free and always will be. The one-time unlock adds batch conversion: drop a folder's worth of .studio3 files and download one ZIP of SVGs. It also adds DXF export.

      One-time unlock

      DXF export and batch conversion

Viewing and SVG export are free. For people who convert a lot, or cut with lasers and CAD, a single payment adds:

      • DXF export in millimetres or inches, one DXF layer per Silhouette layer, for laser, CAD and older cutters.
      • Batch conversion: choose many .studio3 files and download one ZIP of SVGs or DXFs. A file that can't be read is listed with the reason; the rest still convert.
      • No account, no subscription. Files still never leave your computer.

Print-and-cut registration marks aren't included: Cutpeek can't yet read where Silhouette stores them, so it won't pretend to.
